Gender Identity Development from Childhood to Emerging Adulthood: Correlates and Consequences
In this talk Joyce Endendijk will discuss research on gender identity development from childhood to emerging adulthood. The focus is on research with community samples (e.g., with a majority of typically developing or cisgender children). Several dimensions of gender identity will be covered, such as gender typicality, pressure to conform to gender norms, and gender contentedness. We will look at social processes implicated in children’s gender identity development, like the role of parents. Finally, links between youngsters’ gender identity aspects and their well-being, beliefs about gender, and expectations about future career and family life will be addressed.
Joyce Endendijk holds a position as an associate professor at the Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Her research focus on gender socialisation in relation to gender and sexual development in children and adolescents. She collaborated with Sheri Berenbaum and Carol Martin in studies on gender-related attitudes, identity, activities and the relationship with prenatal androgens.
